July 2008

At some point early in 2008, we realized that our current home didn't have the potential to be our "Forever House". After all of the moving and travel that we had done over the last 15 years for my job, being in our Forever House had become a pretty high priority. We were ready to settle down. Michael and I both graduated from high school with the same people with whom we went to elementary school. We wanted Sam to have that same sense of belonging and connection to a community.

We asked our superstar real estate agent (Hi Mom!) to be on the lookout for our Forever House. We looked at a few houses, even made an offer on one, and then on July 11th we saw our house for the first time. We were hooked. This house not only had everything we were looking for in a Forever House, it had the potential to be our Dream House. Beautiful lot, historic architecture, lots of room, and Sam thought the elevator was pretty cool. It was the project that Michael had been waiting for and practicing for his whole life.

We took tons of pictures, had some folks look at the structure of the house, and put in our offer to the sellers. We went to Colorado to visit Deanna the next week. We showed her hundreds of photos and talked non-stop about the house and all of the things that we wanted to do to it. Then we got a call from Mom that our offer had been accepted and we were going to close before August 1st.

And close we did. We went to the title company, signed three pieces of paper, transferred the funds, and we were done. We drove straight to the house from the title company. I think that I expected to be somehow overwhelmed with the enormity of work that we had ahead of us, but that was not the case. Standing in the living room, hugging my husband, all I could feel was pure joy. This house was the perfect backdrop to our happily ever after.
